Reduce Your Food Shopping Bill Today!

food shoppingAll the supermarkets are now fighting for your food shopping  business. Some supermarket stores are even offering to price match other supermarket stores. The latest is Morrison’s who are price matching the German discount stores Aldi and Lidl. This is great news for the shopper.

This year we have seen an average reduction of £2 in our weekly food shopping. This is due to the price war between the supermarkets and it looks set to continue. Whilst a £2 reduction per week does not sound a lot of money to many people, it is when you consider that there are fifty two weeks in the year and it adds up to £104 per year. That’s worth a weeks free shopping each year.

Most of us generally shop at one of the big four supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrison’s. We shop at these big supermarkets because they are conveniently well located and they stock everything we want.   But the two new kids on the block, Aldi or Lidl are fast gaining in popularity. Aldi or Lidl are discount supermarket stores that offer popular quality non-branded products at very reasonable prices.

Other ways to reduce your weekly food shopping bill would be to switch from a premium brand or manufacturers’ brand to the supermarket’s own brands. These brands are unbranded and offer the shopper good value  for money. Often these brands are manufactured by the big brands under the supermarkets own brand. Many shoppers could save up to 20%  a year by changing their current shopping brands.

Grandmothers’ Food Shopping Tip

It seems that some of us are taking a leaf out of our grandmothers’ cookbook and boiling up a tasty meal of pig’s trotters or mutton broth?  There seems to be a return to old fashion cuts of meats as they have suddenly become very popular. More and more people are buying slow cookers in order to slow cook these meat dishes. Butchers are reporting that they just cannot get enough cheap cuts of meat like pork trotters, pigs heads, shin of beef on the bone, sweetbreads, oxtail on the bone, brisket on the bone etc.

Some of these cuts of meat are favourites amongst the West Indian; African and Chinese communities who rich ethnic culture is now interwoven into the fabric of our society. It seems that many old fashioned cuts of meat have returned to our dinner plates. These changes are not just about saving money it seems that in uncertain times old fashioned tastes can return to our dinner plate.

16 Ways to Save money on Your Food Shopping Bill

  1. Make a shopping list before going to the supermarket. It’s the best way of knowing that you are buying what you need and not what you think you need.
  2. Meal planning is important when writing your food shopping list.
  3. Don’t go shopping with your children or husband as they will fill your shopping trolley with goodies that you really don’t need or want.
  4. Most of the large supermarkets offer online shopping and delivery to your front door. Buying online saves money.
  5. The more savvy shoppers amongst us are shopping at their local town markets for fresh fruit, vegetables and meat products. The products found here are often fresher and cheaper than supermarket products.
  6. When paying for your food shopping either pay with a debit card or take cash. This will prevent you from overspending on a credit card.
  7. Look for money-off coupons and discount vouchers before going shopping. There are free mobile apps and voucher and coupon websites available that offer a multitude of offers.
  8. Obtain a store-card for each supermarket that you visit and start collecting points toward money back or money off petrol from their service station. Every little helps!
  9. Buy fresh fruit and vegetables when they are in season and buy by the kilo rather than ready packaged. Trust me it is often a lot cheaper than ready packaged products.
  10. Take your calculator and add up all your food shopping as you shop. This way there will be no surprises when you come to pay.
  11. Try shopping at Aldi or Lidl first for the cheaper items and then go to one of the big supermarkets for the other items you need.
  12. Buy non-branded products
  13. All bottled, tinned and frozen foods have a ‘best-before-date’.  This does not mean that the food is not safe to eat after the date stated. It means that the food will no longer be at its optimum quality but it is still tasty and very edible.  Some online retailers have reported a ten-fold increases in their businesses like www.approvedfoods.co.uk.
  14. You would be surprised how much you could save by shopping twice a week rather than one big shop once a week.
  15. Buy a slow cooker and try buying some cheaper cuts of meat. You will be amazed by the quality of the meals you cook.
  16. Look at buying items like toilet rolls for example in bulk from the wholesale supermarkets. Apply for a cash and carry or a wholesale supermarket membership, like Costco.  They offer an enormous range of goods at incredibly low prices. Individual membership is available for business owners and certain occupations like civil service, health care and education workers.
